Rocks and Minerals
Fourth graders at Willard S. Elementary studied rocks and minerals through visual art making in many media including fiber arts, collage, relief drawing, and illustrated journaling.
Students used observational skills to examine sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. Then created fossil drawings with glue, looked to igneous rocks for inspiration when creating cut-paper collages, and used the principles of metamorphic rocks (pressure, heat, and chemicals) to created felted soap stones.
Here are a few of the GLCE and Common Core standards we touched on in this residency:
> Identify and describe the components of soil
> Compare the physical properties of rocks and minerals
> Describe how weathering agents cause surface changes that create the Earth's surface materials
Visual Art Standards
> Modeling with materials to make organic forms
> Create an original artwork that communicates ideas about the environment, Missouri, the past or present.
> Discuss and develop answers to questions about art
