We started by looking at many different portraits of Native Americans from different time periods and places to help us figure out what we already knew and what we wanted to learn about these diverse groups of people. We also learned some insider-artist tricks to help us draw our own portraits more accurately!
Students used all kinds of natural materials--spices, dried herbs, clay, lentils and more--to develop their self-portraits. The classroom was VERY fragrant! We also talked about Native American naming traditions, read stories and discussed work by contemporary Native American artists.
We try to design Placeworks projects so that there's room for each child's vision to shine through. Take a look at these portraits--same instructions, same materials, but very different results!
