Finley River Alternative School
The teacher's goal for this residency was quite unique. The overall theme was one of Resilience, Perseverance, Peace/Serenity, Positive Thinking, and Overcoming Obstacles. Our teaching artists developed a curriculum that would help spark students' interest in pursuing further artistic goals. They made sketchbook-journals, in order to give students a place to record personal ideas and a safe place to explore different approaches to self expression. This was combined with a Mandala/Zentangle project which explored using art as a mode of relaxation, reflection, and meditation. They also made sculptures from found objects. The concept centered around using thrift store cast-offs which the students broke, then rebuilt as art objects. This was to show that once something is broken it could be become something new and more special.
Here are a few of the GLCE and Common Core standards we touched on in this residency:
- Maintain a positive self-concept.
- Explore, promote, and advocate respect for cultural identity and alternative views within the community.
- Identify and utilize problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Identify, analyze, apply, exhibit resources that can help manage life changes or events.
