Story Writing and Illustration
Through visual and theatre arts students explored story writing and illustration. Our Teaching Artists teamed up to create a four day residency at Pate Early Childhood Center in Aurora. Seven kindergarten classes were guided in theatre and visual arts projects helping them develop a deeper understanding of the story writing process. Each student created a written short story, learned skills to communicate and dramatize stories verbally and with expressive movement, and discovered new techniques for illustration.
All seven kindergarten classes visited the Springfield Art Museum for a half day field trip. Students participated in guided gallery activities such as, creating a simple harmony inspired by abstract paintings, using body and movement to interpret complex works of art, creating collaborative poems to explore printmaking. Local theatre group, The Skinny Improv Playhouse, provided a lively and interactive performance to end the day.
