With the help of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, Kate began Placeworks in 2010 with a project in Conway, MO. She became the Museum Educator at the Springfield Art Museum in 2013. Kate has worked as a teaching artist with the Guggenheim Museum, the Kentler International Drawing Space and the Rubin Museum, and she loves looking at and making art with kids. She received an MFA from the University of Chicago in 2005.
Phil has traveled the world as the drummer and songwriter for the band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and was recently named as a cultural ambassador to Russia by the U.S State Department. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drury University and previously taught songwriting camps for elementary and middle school students. His songs have been featured on MTV, national commercials (Target and MasterCard), and movie soundtracks.
Brian is a metalsmith with a BFA in Metals and Jewelry as well as a BA in History. He has been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. He works from a home studio in Springfield, MO and as a museum assistant for the Springfield Art Museum. In addition to teaching for placeworks he gives private art lessons.
Ashley is a writer, farmer and educator who has worked with children in a wide range of settings, from the classroom to a field of pumpkins. She is a writer specializing in travelogues, children's poetry, and memoir and is a graduate of the Lighthouse Writer's Workshop in Denver, CO. She leads interactive children's film series and field trips as part of the educational outreach program at Moxie Cinema in Springfield, MO. She earned a BA with Honors from Drury University and has studied art history in London and Krakow.
Lillian is a visual artist and metalsmith. She holds a BFA in Metals/Jewelry from Missouri State University. She and her husband operate metals studio and blacksmith shop on their farm in Highlandville, MO. In spring of 2014, she was the artist-in-residence at Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan. Lillian's jewelry pieces combine a variety of materials and processes, including high-fire porcelain, and her designs frequently incorporate movement. Her work has been featured in national and international exhibits and publications, including The Contemporary Jewelry Exchange. Will is a musician and visual artist in Springfield MO. He has travelled the world as the guitarist and "riff-writer" and songwriter for the band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, whose music has been featured in TV shows and Commercials. He has performed on late night TV shows such as the Carson Daily Show and was made a cultural ambassador to Russia by the U.S. State Department. He began making art with candle wax but has more recently been working with oil paint. He has also worked in an Observatory and has a great interest in astronomy.
Cory is a freelance illustrator, artist and educator. She has illustrated professionally for clients including Borden and Tyson Foods, Dynamic Graphics, Inc., Sears Portrait Studios, and more. She was a K-12 art teacher for 7 years, from 2005-12. In addition to Placeworks, Cory teaches for the Springfield Regional Arts Council and the Springfield Art Museum. She creates both traditional and digital art, working in watercolor, pen & ink and a variety of mixed media, as well as in Photoshop using a Wacom Cintiq. Derek holds an M.A in Theatre and Performance Studies from Missouri State University and has a diverse background as a teacher, an arts administrator, an award-winning director/producer, and he is a proud member of Actors Equity. He has worked in the fields of theatre, dance, and opera in New York City, Denver, CO and now Springfield, his home town. He has worked with companies like the internationally acclaimed Ballet Hispanico, where he served as General Manager for eight seasons, and the Tony-award winning The Acting Company which specializes in presenting classical theatre around the county: Derek has worked regionally as Managing Director for Springfield Regional Opera and as Production Stage Manager for Tent Theatre. He has enjoyed various national and international theatrical tours including the Spoletto Festival in Spoletto, Italy, the Festival de Piaz in Antigua, Guatemala, and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in addition to facilitating numerous national residency and outreach programs, including New Orleans Public Schools Arts Revitalization sponsored by GE, a residency serving thousands of disadvantaged youth most hard hit by Hurricane Katrina.
